10 Predictions For The Mobile Industry In 2013

Today the smartest machine in many homes, besides a desktop computer or laptop, is a smartphone. Everything else from the TV to the toaster, are dumb by comparison. But that’s changing, as more devices are enabled with wireless connectivity as per prediction No. 4. The smartphone is also becoming the hub for them all — used to turn off the lights or control the temperature of a house. More devices will go mobile, augmenting the very definition of the term, and the smartphone will become increasingly important as the “mothership” that controls them all.

3 Principles For The Future Of Gaming, From A Google Game Designer
http://www.fastcodesign.com/
Last month, Google unveiled its first mobile game, an ambitious, experimental thing called Ingress. The experience hinges on the narrative that an exotic energy has been discovered on Earth, and two factions, the Enlightened and the Resistance, are respectively scrambling to cultivate it and/or suppress it. It’s kind of boilerplate sci-fi, but the novelty lies in the way the game is played: After players choose their allegiance, they’re tasked with going out into the real world and visiting various destinations to claim territory for their squad. It’s something like what you’d get if you threw geocaching, World of Warcraft, and J.J. Abrams in a blender—a massive multiplayer experience that transpires not in a virtual world but in a slightly warped version of our own.

Gestures as a New Dimension in Mobile Design – The Industry

Clear
Clear is unique in the fact that essentially every piece of the app is based around gestures. Besides a few settings, everything is created and deleted with the use of simple, yet efficient motions. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but before Clear, I don’t think there was an application that was designed specifically for a gesture based UX.
Lose Something? These Tiny Stickers Will Find It
http://mashable.com/2012/12/
A group of developers created a series of Bluetooth-powered stickers that track down the objects you’re most likely to misplace. The StickNFind stickers are about the size of a U.S. quarter and sync with a smartphone app. They have a range of about 100 feet and a battery life that reportedly lasts almost a year.

Why skeuomorphism isn’t dead at Apple
All this talk of the skeuomorphic design philosophy favored by Steve Jobs will be following Forstall out the door is too simplistic and wrong, he said. Skeuomorphism is much more than visual — like the “linen” background texture on the iPhone or the gradients applied to the new iTunes icon. There’s also the skeuomorphic animations in an OS: page turns, slide to unlock, etc.
“I don’t think skeuomorphism is bad at all. We need that [animations] to interact with devices in a human way. Gaudy textures are just a visual design problem … I hope they tone it down.”
